This 2400 SF house on the Eastern Shore of Virginia is located on a newly developed greenfield site, facing a wetlands marsh and the ocean beyond. The shape of the house appropriates a local, rural typology, developed as a double-figure massing: two similar volumes of different lengths which house the 3 bedrooms, positioned side by side and elevated above the open living spaces on the ground floor. Inspired by the surrounding landscape of low reeds and expansive views, the siting of the house is designed to provide privacy from the road and future neighbors while establishing a fluid and open relationship between the interior of the house and the tidal marsh landscape beyond. From the upper level, looking over the immediate landscape, the bedrooms have open views of the ocean, as well as the occasional rocket launch from the nearby NASA facility.
