24th Street Residence

New York, NY

The design prompt for this 1,400 SF complete renovation was to provide a surprise around every corner, optimizing the apartment’s spectacular 31st floor panoramic views of Lower Manhattan. To do so required working around several large, immoveable structural elements in the space, which block these views and natural light at the entry. In response, materiality and reflection became the central themes for the design, progressively unfolding views of the Manhattan skyline as one moves through the apartment. Walls and structural elements are clad with Starfire glass panels, articulating spaces within the open plan and playfully reflecting views and natural light where they are least expected. In contrast to the ephemeral glass, mirror, and marble surfaces in the apartment, custom millwork elements provide a light but solid material counterpart. This includes quartersawn, figured maple cabinetry at the kitchen and entry, and a series of custom-made furniture elements designed by PellOverton.
