13th Street Residence
New York, NY
This residence just south of Union Square called for a new plan organization and updated material palette which could unify the open loft qualities of the apartment with a more private bedroom suite at the rear of the building. Taking cues from the industrial tie-backs supporting the exposed, original brick walls, a series of steel casement details were developed as a continuous, unfolding motif throughout the apartment. Beginning at the entrance, these linear elements trace the perimeter of the living spaces, transitioning from custom millwork pieces at the entry and along the window wall to steel frames supporting floating, tinted glass panels which separate the entry and home office from the open living and dining room. To further establish a sense of visual continuity throughout the apartment while still allowing each space to be distinct, the size, coloring, and material qualities of the tinted glass panels is mimicked elsewhere: from the wallpaper panel at the dining room, to the glass panels surrounding the kitchen island, to the smoked glass mirror in the hallway.
