Unity of New York is a 250 member, non-denominational congregation, which recently relocated its administrative and public programming to a 5,000 SF loft space in Chelsea. We were asked to design Unity’s new facility, to include multi-purpose spaces, classrooms, and offices for the nonprofit organization. Our design approach was guided by Unity’s desire for a warm, meditative space to both support the daily operations of its staffers as well as provide a quiet sanctuary for congregants during the work day. The resulting build-out relies on a combination of natural finishes and large, open spaces which serve as a clean and modern backdrop to Unity’s varied programming: from adult education classes to choir practice. Throughout, furniture-scaled elements quietly animate the space, including a series of folded ceiling panels in the public assembly room, and a small volume with a faceted exterior shell which envelopes an interior prayer space.
